AI's first

..automobile accident. thank god all's well considering the circumstances. seribu syukur.
Perhaps a little lesson in humility was necessary.

No amount of advice or info sharing can ever really prepare us for our first brush with another vehicle or driver. its the ultimate reminder of our own vulnerability and mortality. yup, we're rudely reminded that this steel shell that we're safely enconsed in is actually just providing us with a VERY false sense of security. we're not invincible... in fact, we're actually not safe at all.

And we're totally at the mercy of the moment.

- we might be physically hurt from the impact (or die for that matter but lets just not go there)

- we might be verbally (or physically) abused by the other driver

- we might be manipulated or exploited by others who're always ready to take advantage

- we might even have to face the wrath of deranged individuals

Fact is you can never be in control of the situation because strangers are involved. even tho you do not want to be afraid of your own shadows, there is certainly a need to practice caution. on one hand you want to keep believing in humanity but you are also aware that its a mad mad world out there.

So.. the best thing to do is to cut down the possibilities of getting into such a situation in the first place. travel only when you need to.

Yup, travel only when necessary my darlings.

(Huh, and i'm actually saying this to hot-blooded young males with cars at their disposal?!)

And Abe, thank you so much for the support & understanding :)

Undoing the good

.. of ramadhan. really, it doesnt take much. all you have to do is lose yourself in the madness of eating, eating and more eating, the scale of which is roughly equivalent to the number of open house invites.

Yup.. senseless eating.

And once you start feeling like a bloated old toad, your enthusiasm takes a hike & the excuses comes pouring in. its so easy to slide into passivity.

Passive indulgence?

Please, its something you DO NOT want to happen.

(i am not a bloated toad, i am not a bloated toad, i am not a bloated toad, i am not a bloated toad, i am not a bloated toad, i am not a bloated toad.......)

A reminder.. to ME!! but i sure as hell dont mind sharing.

Reminder 1.

Running is only Part of the Story
Putting in the miles will help you lose weight, but there is the other half of the weight-loss equation.

Weight Loss = Exercise + Reduced Calories

Reduced calories can come from running, but it must also come from reduced eating!

However, don't go on a crash diet! If you try and reduce too many calories through dieting, your body may think it is starving, and it may lower your metabolism in an attempt to conserve energy.

A reasonable goal is to reduce your calories from food by about 300 per day. That, plus losing 200 calories per day due to running will give you a weight loss of about a pound a week. That may not seem like much, but that is 52 pounds per year, and that is significant weight loss.

Be sure that the calories you do consume come from a nutritious diet. Eat veggies, fruits, fish, poultry, nuts, and whole grains.
If possible, shun processed foods and prepare meals from "scratch".

Avoid eating three big meals a day. Instead, eat five or six small meals. If you eat more often but smaller meals, you'll be less hungry for each meal and may be better able to control your intake.

Bottom line: If you're exercising to lose weight, I encourage you to separate exercise and weight.

Yes, you should exercise for health, fitness, stress relief and, most importantly, for enjoyment -- After all, the E in exercise stands for enjoyment! I discourage you from exercising to burn off calories; that makes exercise feels like punishment for having excess body fat. When exercise is something you do to your body, rather than for your body, you'll eventually quit exercising. Bad idea. Instead of focusing on exercise to lose body fat, pay attention to your calorie intake. Knocking off just 100 calories a day from your evening snacks can theoretically result in a 10-pounds fat loss in a year.

Reminder 2.

Myth: The more you exercise, the more fat you lose.
Often, the more you exercise, the hungrier you get, and:
-the more you eat, or;
-the more your believe you "deserve" to eat, or;
-the more you want to eat as a reward for both getting to the gym and surviving the workout.

But if you spend 60 minutes in a spin class and burn off 600 calories only to reward yourself with 12 Oreos (600 calories), you'll wipe out your weight-loss efforts in less than three minutes!

The effects of exercise on weight loss are complex and unclear. A study showed that 56- to 78-year-olds who participated in a vigorous walking program had nearly the same daily calorie needs as those who didn't exercise (2,400 without exercise, 2,480 with exercise).

How could that be? Well, the exercisers napped more and were 62 percent less active throughout the rest of their day than non-exercisers.

Another study of post-menopausal women found the same results from eight weeks of moderate exercise training. Their 24-hour energy expenditure remained similar from the beginning to the end of the program.

Bottom line: Eat according to your entire day's activity level, not according to how hard you trained that day.

NOTE:
Rough estimation - A 30 min run at a comfortable pace burns about 12 calories per minute.

In reply to Kat

.. theres something freakishly wrong with my blog today. i cant seem to post a response to any of the the comments ntah knape ntah.

So to kat, arin & amir about your query on landing midfoot, there's a brief explanation below. i'm guessing you thought middle was somewhere near the arch right? hehehe aunty pun mula2 ingat camtu gak tapi its actually the ball of the foot (BOF). hope you kiddoes are doing well, miss yall much :)

FOOT POSITION ON LANDING - BALL OF FOOT (BOF)

A proper foot position on landing is a very important part of your running technique but ironically it is not the one that you should focus on. Proper foot landing should become your second nature. For that to happen you need to do it many times over and preferrably do it right each time. How do you repeat one move again and again? You do drills that are designed specifically for that. But let's start from the beginning.

What is the proper foot position on landing? On the ball of your foot with the body weight centered over it. The ball of the foot is also referred to as the forefoot in running literature, the area under the sesamoid joint, 1-st metatarsal and big toe. Sometimes the "forefoot landing" is misunderstood as your toes supposed to be doing something. Let your toes do what they do best - help your body keep balance.

So, you land on the balls of your feet with your bodyweight on them, with the toes doing their own balancing thing and the heels acting accordingly. What does that mean? When you position your body weight over the balls of your feet, even if your heels are still touching the ground, they will feel weightless and off the ground. That's how it should be, any attempt to force your heels to go higher will result in either calf strain or ankle pain, etc. The height of the heel lift on landing is determined by the speed of running. The faster you go - the higher your heel will go. And your heels will do that on their own if you let them, because they are a part of the overall system where everything is connected and is not independent, so when you perform certain actions they set off a whole chain of events that happen "on their own". Because this is how the human body works.

Why is landing on the balls of the feet better than flatfoot landing or heal striking? Because it's the most effective foot position for running technique. While healstriking simply is the cause of majority of running related injuries and should be discarded for that reason alone, the flatfoot landing cannot and does not produce the "spring" effect that allows for virtually any movement. The ball of foot landing is a part of the "S-spring" body position, making the body compact and loaded with elastic energy and ready to run fast! How do you practice the proper landing on the ball of foot? You do running drills that are specifically designed to help you perfect just that.

After practicing the running drills for a while, you'll start executing the right moves simply because your body remembers how, so there is no need to waste energy on focusing on what happens on it's own. And since our goal is to simplify our task of executing a perfect running technique, having one thing less to think about is what we need.

Grills

.. and barbecues come together as naturally as 'irama & lagu' dont they?!

Been thinking of getting me one of 'em electric indoor grills, one that would be just right for my cosy little terrace. of course nothing beats the taste of 'charcoaled' bbqs tapi its such a hassle to set up especially when all you're thinking of grilling is just a slab of meat or two, or a couple of chicken wings!!

Whats holding me back from getting one is just a simple matter of indecision... i just cant decide between a flat top grill or the one that has grooves on them. the flat one would be more versatile i think (panaskan pratha, buns and even cook eggs & pancakes) but then the grooves would allow easy drainage of fats/oils from the grilled meats and also creating that authentic looking grill lines over the food.

Unfortunately the one that offers both (with removable flat top) is a little too expensive for me. i'm not ready to invest that much ringgit, at least not for now la.

So, i'm stumped. and when that happens i just keep on deliberating... and deliberating.. and deliberating.. and deliberating... and deliberating, well you get the picture.

Running Notes:
The higher you lift yourself off the ground when running, the greater the shock you have to absorb when landing and the faster your legs will fatigue. To minimize bounce and save energy, run lightly, land softly on your feet, and focus on a faster turnover. Try to keep your feet low to the ground with shorter strides.

Your arms can help you keep your stride low and short. Keep your arms bent at a 90 degree angle and concentrate on swinging them lower and shorter. By keeping your arm swing lower and quicker, your legs will stay lower to the ground -- resulting in a shorter stride.

Also, don't be a toe runner or a heel-striker. If you land on your toes, your calves will get tight or fatigue quickly and you may develop shin pain. Landing on your heels means you have overstrided and you're braking, which wastes energy and may cause injury. Try to land on the middle (ball) of your foot, and then roll through to the front of your toes.

And when you're running, you should breathe in and out through your mouth. Your muscles need oxygen to keep moving and your nose simply can't deliver enough. Deep belly breathing allows you to take in more air, which can also help prevent side stitches.

50 yr Itch?

... eerrrr, maybe not ;)

Its my forgetfulness/absentmindedness/terlupa-ness that usually gets me into these 'itchy' situations.. hehehe, itchy as in the flea kind and to be more specific, nicolei's!!

He gets his flea control treatment (spot-on) every month... when i remember that is. ooh i usually do bcos it has a direct impact on me. you see, when he goes without it, after a week or two i start itching & scratching. his fleas are the death of me :(

With so much happening your's truly completely forgot all about getting the fat cat his monthly spot-on (lucky me theres 2 pet-shops almost side by side in section 9 so i dont have to wander far)... but not until i started to feel the familiar itch that usually starts at my feet. urggh, imagine the legion of fleas biting away at my skin (i exaggerate la but still...) !!

So a pet-shop visit later and 88 ringgit poorer (a box of spot-on containing 3 tubes, a bottle of shampoo for long-haired felines, a regular pact of IAMS) the fat one is that much closer to being less infested, yay. i'm planning a long, calming, thereupatic bath (eheheh he'd be yowling the house down more likely) for him this saturday ;)

Abe- mek's getting so much better so you neednt worry k. her appetite's making a come-back.. a little sluggish perhaps but at least she seems more interested in what she's eating these days. thats always a good sign, right?!
AF & AI - keep the momentum going dudes.. jangan senang sangat side-tracked!!

Chores

.. chores and more chores. the bane of a career woman without a maid.

But i dont kill myself over transgressions. there are days when the floors dont get mopped or the tops arent dusted, and i'm fine with that. theres only so much i can do in a day and i've learned to accept it. i am not superwoman.

Still, chores are chores and eventually they need to be done so the better part of today was spent doing just that.

The boys were where they're supposed to be (at least i hope so), AH was at the library studying (or trying to) for her finals and mak was... well, mak was doing whatever it is that she does in the back room.

So i had free reign.

Now i'm pooped, but happy that the laundry's all done & the house's all clean & sweet smelling (for now anyway). and i even had time left-over to groom the fat cat.. enough to start the female felines of the neighbourhood a-swooning again hik2. way to go nicolei !!

NICO!!! leave mommy's carpet alone will ya!!! sheeesh!!

Hehehe ;)

(but i'm still missin' ya babe..)

Ohh btw abe, i think i might've scared the bejezus out of your friend meor when he dropped by to pick up his bag. hehehe tu la abe tak bagi warning awal2.. i was more like a half-crazed idiot than somebody's wife; half wet, bedraggled and i probably stank worse than a skunk!! i just got back from my morning workout and was washing the cars and the porch and watering the plants (and generally main air).. when your sms came in. nasib baik sempat lug down his luggage, berat tau!! and you owe me one for not running away & hiding tho i desperately wanted to ;)

Sometimes

.. all you can do is doa.

Doa yang baik2 untuk anak2 yang tersayang.

I know AI can do it but the fact still remains that he's an inexperienced driver so i worry.. cant help it. But i also know he needs the opportunity to experiment on his own to become experienced so i have to bite my lips, stand aside and allow him to do just that.

*ooops i've drawn blood - ptuuuh*

Aduh, susah susah but my babies have all grown up and need to fly.

Lord please keep them all safe.

And bless us, we'd be lost without YOU.

Skull splitting

.. experience and a hard lesson learnt.

I run on empty most of the time, paling2 pun i dunk down my usual vitamins with half a glass of plain water. i dunno it just feels better that way.. and also bcos i'm not an early breakfast person nor do i chalk up that much mileage anyway.

But yesterday, yesterday was a horror!!

After my morning run, i was 'consumed' by work. one report led to another and another and another and before i knew it, it was almost lunchbreak. hah, twas then that i realised i might be in serious trouble.. tak pasal2 i was feeling lightheaded and nauseous!! yelah kan, dah lama tak exercise tetiba tak makan tak minum sampai midday.. usia pun dah 'menjelang senja' so agaknya badan pun memberontak la kot.

From that point onwards, pressure kept building up in my skull to the point that it felt like exploding and for a minute there i was quite concerned that my grey matter might end up on the office walls!! sheesh sakit giler. actually, i have gone thru the same thing a couple of times before and it has always been associated with an empty stomach. 'perut masuk angin sampai naik kepala' was what my grandma used to tell me and in my case i guess its true. i'm generally healthy and i dont have migraines so maybe it is the 'angin' thing although the medical community has never agreed to such a thing. ask your doctor and the only thing associated with 'angin' or 'wind' would be flatulence. according to the docs mana ada angin mencucuk2 or any such thing.

But like i said its true for me... tapi alhamdulillah masa puasa tak kena pulak :) i think masa puasa you're prepared for the subsequent emptiness of the stomach, unlike the situations that take you by surprise (or the signs that you stupidly choose to ignore).

Anyway after work, i spent the rest of the day in bed guling2 trying to sleep it off. i knew from past experience, the only thing to shake it off was sleep but it just evaded me. even the painkiller i took didnt help much. in fact i might've even scared my poor cat off with my moans and groans (i'd have you know i'm not usually pre-dispose to such behaviour).

But somewhere in the nite i must've finally slipped into deep sleep because i woke up this morning with my head completely free of any 'pressure', yay!!! syukur alhamdulillah thank you Lord... theres so much to do i cant afford to be down & under in any way.

Lesson learned: Jaga makan... terlebih pun tak boleh, terlupa pun tak boleh haish ;)

Running Notes:
.. posting it here for me to read & digest later :)
I.

Let's take two twins, both 200lbs, both doing the same training program, taking the same supplements, and following the same nutrition plan in the hopes of getting lean. One difference, though: one of them eats 2 eggs and does 30 minutes of cardio three days per week. The other does 30 minutes of cardio, three days per week and THEN eats 2 eggs.So what's the magical difference in terms of fat loss after six months? Drum roll please... I'll tell you no ****ing difference.

Most likely thats true, here is why. During the fasted exercise you WILL burn more fat than non-fasted, but AFTER the execise the non-fasted burns most fat. This is because non-fasted will use more glycogen, and when its replaced post exercise it burns fat. Many studies have shown by 24hours the net fat burn is the same.

II.
Lets deal with comments like 'Fat people finish marathons', geez, I thought it was 'look how thin and puny marathon runners are, so don't do aerobics'.......Shakes head, curses poor teaching of science.

Deep breath....This gets at perhaps THE most IMPORTANT fact most people don't understand in our scientifically illiterate world which is edgeing back to the dark ages, sort of like being in the matrix. If you don't want to be fooled by people, you owe it to yourself to understand it.

If I select 100 random people, and have them do any exercise for muscle gain or fat loss, the results will be as follows:
1-2 people will get fantastics result
1/3rd will get good results
1/3rds will get OK results
1/3 will get poor results.( this is known as a normal distribution).

Now, when you watch an informercial on tv to sell exercise routines or equipment, they show you the 1-2 people who got fantatics results. When you talk to some 'muscular guy at the gym'..he's maybe the same, likewise when you look at bodybuilders, or athlete's.YOU CANNOT ASSUME CAUSE-EFFECT JUST BY LOOKING AT PEOPLE.

Case in point: just because many fat people do cardio, or thin people do cardio is meaningless to effects of cardio. Plenty of thin people lift wieghts, as do plenty of fat people - does lifting wieght make you thin or fat?To anyone who clings to this belief, ask them- Will I get taller by playing basketball, or doing the high jump?Of course, people know that's silly, I mean that's genetics right?... and yet it seems to make sense to say 'look see that thin runner, running makes you thin'...but infact, it is equally silly scientifically.

Go look at olympic distance triathletes, swim 1mile, bike 30miles, run 6miles....most have the kind of muscular/low body physique guys would want...but wait, that doesn't mean I or YOU will get that physique.THIS IS KNOWN AS SELECTION BIAS.To become an olympic triathlete, you need the kind of gene's that will produce that kind of body, but most people wont'.

Likewise, when you see sprinters, or body builders, or distance runners, you are seeking FREAKS, the 1 or 2 in maybe a 1000's who's body responds in the ideal way for that exercise.Bottom line - Forget about using looks to determine what cause-effect exercise has, because mostly what you are seeing is 'gene expression', just like height !NOTE TO SELF - no one will belief this deep down, because we base so much on looks, we just can't get past our instincts.

OK then, so how do we know what the exercise effect are?You have to look at studies using random samples, and how EVERYONE's body responded, not a few freaks. You then ask why? why did people get such different results, what is cause-effect science. In the case of height, we know its gene's. Guess what, in the case of ability to gain muscle, lose fat, how you respond to exercise its...drum role please...also gene's...who'd have thunk' huh?

Despite gene's(body type) being about 2/3rd of the whole ball game of how you look, you don't hear much about it, 'cos no one can sell you anything to change it! infact, to sell you their miracle product/routine, they need you not to realize it.You are born with a certain bone size, types of muscle fibre that cannot be changed, and metabolism - you can adapt/change about 1/3 of it. Sprinters, body builder, marathon runners are products of gene's, not how they exercise, the exercise only maximizes POTENTIAL.

YEEESSS!! I'm back

.. to pounding the pavement and i didnt trip or fall or anything hehehe :)

I was a little anxious (even scared actually) when i was pulling on my socks this morning.. what if i couldnt finish my usual loop? what if my knees suddenly buckled or worse, what if i sprained my ankles? or if i'm suddenly lightheaded and terpukang tepi track?

Ridiculous thoughts it may be to some but to me (yang dah tersangat la lama tak buat exercise langsung) the concerns were pretty real. especially because i always seem to be fighting myself and setting personal limits yang ntah pape.. like any seasoned golfer who's spurred on by his own handicap, my greatest adversary has always been me, myself & i.

Apa salahnya jalan je kan kalau dah takut sangat? bukannya apapun i'm just an old fart and nobody gives a rats ass anyway... but nooooooooooo, i just wouldnt let me!!!! macam cari pasal je kan... but i cant help it and i also know myself too damn well.

So, i started out very slow & springy making sure i landed on the balls of my feet and not thumping along like a granny elephant. thank god i was back to my rhythm before long and halfway thru i slowly realised that i really might just make it after all!! breathing ok, knees ok, ankles ok and i wasnt cramping anywhere... i was ecstatic!!

I'm not athletic or sporty in any way so little achievements like this is enough to make me mighty happy :)

I finished my 4k run in about 30-33 mins.. my dress watch (the one on loan from AI) wasnt really all that precise. which reminds me, abe bila nak beli jam sport kite ek? its meaningless la if i got it for myself.. nak abe yang belikan so that i can feel you're with me when i run ;)

(Ooooh i'm so going to ache tomorrow..but its good, its all good lol)

Thank you UMW toyotsu motors s/b for the service rendered, in particular thank you so much Rinee for being so helpful & friendly to this ignorant makcik.

Its all about taking the time to actually find out what the eff is really going on and trying to meet customer's need.

Aaaah apapun.... legaaaaaa!!

2. MILKY WHATEVER - be it chocs, creams, cheeses, mayo & the lot.

And lets leave it at that for now.

This is it

.. enough is enough dammit!!!!

Lately i've been feeling fat, lazy n just wallowing away in self-pity. i dunno, things are not going my way i guess and topping the list is the absence of the hubs (sigh, i miss u luv).

I just cant seem to slip into 'chief caretaker' mode as easily as before and this lethargy is killing me!! doesnt help much that things start falling apart when i'm on my own. case in point, the flat tyre. haish mana pulak la datangnya paku gajah tu la weh..

Ok, having a flat tyre in itself aint no big deal i know, but throw in the absence of an important component in changing the tyres i.e. the locknut, and it becomes a horrendously problematic situation!! plus the fact that it was a rainy sunday evening, and that the auto-assist personnel that finally came to my aid didnt have anything remotely similar to the missing piece, which left me solving the problem on my own.

Gawd i was in such a fix!!! it was getting dark and i was running out of options. locknut? i didnt even know such a thing existed let alone how important it was. nor did i realise it was missing from the toolbox, and i bet golfman didnt either!! but thank god for the other beemer, and thank god the locknut for the 5 series is similar to the 3, so when rosli (my nephew) came to help, he was able to. with the all important locknut he had gotten from my house, the tyres were changed in a jiffy!!

Moral of the situation: Even small things play a crucial role in life so never take anything for granted.

The flat tyre aside, when you get to be as old as i am you know that nothing justifies the laziness & self-pity so after a while you start feeling pretty stooooopid as well.

Fat, lazy n stoooopid is definately NOT good.

So..

its time to take charge of my body & soul again. its time to appreciate god's gift to mankind; maximising usage of my akal *raps forehead - ouch*

"..God does not change a people's lot unless they change what is in their hearts...", Ar-Rad:11.

Aku mensyukuri segala nikmat MU.. yes, its not something to squander away.

The looong day

.. started with a convoy to melaka and we made good time considering it was AI's first trip back to lendu in his own car :)

Golfman insisted that we made that convoy and i certainly wasnt about to go against 'the boss' no siree. So whether AI liked it or not, we tagged along but i respected his wish to drive on his own even though AZ was around to accompany him. besides, it was a good idea since he was eventually going to be on his own anyway.

(and i know for sure AH was happy to have AZ all to herself eheheh).

Thank god we didnt encounter any unexpected jams either way and before we knew it, we were safely back in good ole shah alam!! so, AH & AZ went on to their raya gathering while i made it to my neighbour's open house with time to spare.

I had earlier received an sms from my niece inviting me over to my cucu sedara's birthday after maghrib, making way to another makan2 session... it sure looked like our fate was sealed and that we were all getting our faces stuffed to the max!!

Then of course the unexpected happened, turning the day into one of the longest of days!!

But lets talk about that later, much much later... i'm just too pooped & tyres are not my favourite subject right now.

AMIR my dearest cucu... happy birthday, may you have a happy & blessed life little one:)

Yay

.. word has come in that golfman's ok!!

Seems that he's crashing over at DS's place (thank u ds) for the time being.

Syukur alhamdulillah alls well.

Cant help but worry (yea, its no big secret that i'm a worrywart lol). but then worry is just another of those things one deals with as long as one is living & breathing so its ok i guess.

Just have to keep it in perspective.

Luvya abe. doakan kitorang :)

Aidil/Eidul/Idul Fitri

Hope yall had a wondeful eid with friends & loved ones.

Took some awesome family pics for raya, semi formal (we never could do formal with all the goofing around that always seem to be going on) as well as candid (theres one thats a cross between a mafia family and a yakuza family hehehe).. but i'll have to wait for AF to come back this weekend to upload (or download, i always get utterly confuse between the two) the pics from his dslr. we were all so busy we completely forgot all about it.

It really was a whirlwind of activity for me & the family, what with raya, the hubs leaving and having his mom warded in hukm a few days after raya for pneumonia.

It kinda took everyone by surprise but she must've been affected by the fasting somehow. But the good thing is, her breathing has improved and shes generally much better so the hubs was able to leave with a lighter heart. and unlike me, he does have his bros to depend on.

Yup, as of today, i'm operating on my own again since golfman aka abe ku saye aka love of my life is already halfway to his destination right now.

Back to settling all the bills n stuff.

Back to being 'chief caretaker'.

Kids, you better behave. i need you to.

(sigh... i miss u already abe)
